The whirling reels of video slots can grab players’ attention, but blackjack tables continue to remain popular and now offer a sprawling array of options. In this guide, you can take the first steps of learning how to play blackjack.

Blackjack Rules

Blackjack shall challenge you to outdo the dealer in finishing closest to 21. In facing off against the dealer, you will encounter the following rules:

• Blackjack is scored with the combined values of the cards. Numerical cards are scored on the values they display, face cards are worth 10, and aces can be 1 or 11.

• You start a hand by laying down a bet that falls within the accepted table limits.

• The dealer then gives one card to each player and leaves their first card facing up (up-card). Every player will then get a second, while the dealer will leave their second card facing down (down-card).

• After receiving two cards, you tally up your score and make your next decision. This can cause you to stand on your hand, accept additional cards, or double your bet and receive only one more card.

• If you have a matching pair, then the dealer will let you split the cards, add another stake, and then play the hands separately against the dealer.

• The dealer shall make all of their decisions after you have finished, which means you might have busted before they even have to make a decision.

• When the dealer plays, they must hit until they reach 16 and will stand if they get 17 or higher.

• If you win a hand, then the dealer shall pay 1/1 odds, while blackjack is worth 3/2.

Blackjack Insurance

When the dealer has an ace as their up-card, you have the option to bet half of your stake on the dealer having blackjack.

Although you will lose your stake, you can win with 2/1 odds if the dealer has blackjack and you have placed insurance.

Early Surrender

After receiving your cards, you can opt to take early surrender if the dealers show an ace as their up-card.

This will cause half of your stake to be forfeited, while the dealer then checks for blackjack. If there is no blackjack, then you will receive back half your stake.

Basic Blackjack Strategy

Blackjack offers a small house edge of only 0.28% in Las Vegas rules, but only if you commit to playing with the basic blackjack strategy:

• Stand from 12 to 16 if the dealer is showing 2 to 6 on their up-card.

• Hit from 12 to 16 if the dealer is showing anywhere from seven up to ace.

• Hit or sometimes double your stake whenever you have ace to 6.

• You can risk doubling your stake whenever you have an 11 compared to the dealer holding 2 to 10.

• The only cards to split should be aces or 8s, as these offer the greatest chance of winning both hands versus the dealer.
